The first Scavengers was held in the ICA (Institute of Contemporary Arts) in London in July 2000. Twelve teams of up to four people were issued with 100 clues and took part in the ultimate creative scavenger hunt to win £1000 CASH. Now Scavengers goes global.
Competitors are issued with a list of clues of things they have to find, scavenge or make. Each clue is worth a disclosed amount of points to be scored at the end of the day. Contestants may have to come back with all kinds of things – a fried egg, a sandcastle, a photo-booth recreation of a painting from the local gallery, a sculpture of the Eiffel Tower made from drinking straws – depending on the clue given. The clues vary from city to city. Extra points are awarded for ‘creativity’ at the judges discretion.
The winning team takes away the cash prize. Scavenge for cash. But this is only the beginning of the show. The collected items form an exhibition in the host venue. Tables, glass cabinets and plinths are laid out with objects collected on the day of the hunt and labelled with the corresponding clue. The gallery visitor is encouraged to observe the variety of responses each clue provokes. Participating Scavengers are encouraged to proclaim that they have contributed to a group show at the prestigious host venue.
Scavengers is a great day out and an entertaining visual spectacle that also takes a wry look the contemporary art scene.
