‘The Audience of Contemporary Performance’
English with Chinese translation

Across a range of artistic disciplines, artists are dealing with audiences in innovative and creative ways, placing the audience at the heart of their work. Contemporary culture is marked by the emancipation of the spectator and the transformation of the audience from passive recipient to active participant. This talk is a critical and practical investigation of what is at stake for audiences today when they attend a live event. Participants will be encouraged to think about and explore innovative ways of working with audiences.

‘Artist Talk: Working Across Visual and Performing Arts’
English with Chinese translation

The artistic disciplines are perhaps more connected now than they have ever been before. Many artists work to combine visual and performing arts together. Joshua Sofaer has been making works which are not always easy to define and which blur boundaries. He has been working across a range of different kinds of cultural institutions: art galleries, museums, and theatres, as well as in domestic houses or in the street. In this artist talk he will consider the strategies that he has used for working across these different contexts.

‘Artist Talk: What if it’s not going so well? What if it’s going badly?’
English only

When artists talk about their work, perhaps especially work that is made with the participation of communities or the public, they tend to do so with an uncritical celebratory rhetoric. Too often the challenges of making the work are hidden or glossed over. Joshua Sofaer has been making work across different artistic disciplines in a range of public contexts in collaboration with communities. In this talk he will introduce some of his works and highlight the challenges that he has faced during their production.

‘Introducing Night Market Theatre’
English with Chinese translation

When Joshua Sofaer came to Taiwan for the first time in the autumn of 2012 he was struck by the Night Market culture and the delicious foods that could be found there. Travelling across the island he visited Night Markets in Taipei, Tainan and Hualien. When Prototype Paradise asked him to think of a project that he might want to work on in Taiwan, he wanted to find a way of working alongside the stallholders and with the citizens who come to socialise and fill their bellies. In this talk he will introduce his idea for Night Market Theatre.
