St Matthew Passion
Real life stories at Folkoperan
St Matthew Passion by J S Bach, Spring 2014
On March 26, Folkoperan will premier St Matthew Passion by J S Bach in a performance concept by director Joshua Sofaer. Opera soloists, The Real Group, the orchestra Rebaroque, and external choirs combine to create a passionate retelling with stories from their own lives.
St. Matthew Passion is a work that is often played in churches at Easter time. It tells the story of the suffering and death of Jesus. J S Bach wrote the work in the early 1700s as a religious oratorio. He was interested to communicate the Easter story to the people. The work was performed in German instead of Latin, which was otherwise the norm at the time.
“I’m interested, together with the company, to explore the grand themes of the passion related to our own lives. Guilt, cruelty, sacrifice, joy and peace are important themes as they address us all living as neighbours on the earth together”, says director Joshua Sofaer.
In this new version for Folkoperan, the company will include opera singers, The Real Group, the orchestra Rebaroque and singers from Adolf Fredrik church’s youth choir and youth choir Hägerstens .
